Click on the Direct Object in the following sentences.
He did not catch it, but the ball went over his head and broke Mrs. Smith's stained glass window
Then Jim threw John the ball.
John hit the ball to Jim.
The Direct Object is highlighted in the following sentences.
The direct object is the word that describes who or what receives the action  of the sentence.
The Direct Object:
The Subject does the action (verb).  Very often, the action is done to something else.  The word that describes what is acted upon by the subject is called the Direct Object.
