The Verb: The Action Word
It is important to be able to break any sentence down into the core skeleton of meaning. The heart of any sentence is the verb. Any sentence has some sort of action or assertion. The word that tells this action is the verb. Sometimes two or more words are used to communicate one verbal idea. For example -
The verb is the word that describes the action of the sentence.
The verb is highlighted in the following sentences:
John hit the ball to Jim.
Then Jim threw John the ball
He did not catch it, but the ball went over his head and broke Mrs. Smith's stained glass window.
