
- 1. Attendance/Participation-
- Student is to be present, to be on time, and to actively participate in class discussion.
- See EBC attendance policy below.
- 2. Worship Journal-
- Students will keep a journal of their worship activities for the first 5 weeks of the term.
- This assignment should focus more on the intimacy and connection with God than with the techniques and activities of music, leadership, and worship.
- The journal should reflect your individual interaction with God in worship, and your individual call and preparation for worship ministry. Therefore, it may contain anything you think is appropriate to record.
- In addition, it should also contain a brief account of each worship activity, how you were affected by it and how it has prepared you for worship leadership.
- Worship Journal Due Friday Oct. 19th at 2:00pm.
- 3. Textbook Reading/ Book Report-
- The student will read the course textbook in its entirety and write a book report containing the following three parts:
- i. Summary-
- Describe the main thesis of the book and how the author develops/argues this thesis.
- Give a short summary of each chapter and describe how it contributes to the overall message of the book.
- ii. Personal reaction-
- Describe your impression of the main thesis of the book and its development.
- Do you agree? Why or Why not? What stuck out to you positively? What stood out negatively?
- iii. Personal/Ministry Application-
- Specifically describe how you are applying or plan to apply what you have gained from the textbook reading to your personal life and/or ministry.
- What are the steps you are taking or plan to take to reach this goal?
- Book Report Due Friday Nov. 2nd at 2:00pm.
- 4. Worship Leader Journal Reading-
- The student will read two articles of their choice from Worship Leader magazine and write a brief report containing the following three parts:
- i. Summary-
- Describe the main thesis of each article and how the author develops/argues this thesis.
- ii. Personal reaction-
- Describe your impression of the main thesis of the articles and its development.
- Do you agree? Why or Why not? What stuck out to you positively? What stood out negatively?
- iii. Personal/Ministry Application-
- Specifically describe how you are applying or plan to apply what you have gained from the articles to your personal life and/or ministry.
- What are the steps you are taking or plan to take to reach this goal?
- Journal Report Due Friday Nov. 16th at 2:00pm.
- 5. Worship Critiques
- Students will choose two events at which worship is present as part of the service.
- These may include regular church services or special events.
- One critique may be from your local home church, but the two critiques should be from different places and worship leaders.
- They, however, may not include events in which peers are in charge of or play a significant part of the worship (i.e. EBC chapel worship).
- Write a critique on the worship segment of the service.
- Each of the two critiques will be at least 500 words (1-2 pages typed)
- The critiques will include discussion on the following criteria:
- i. Song selection-
- Make a list of all the songs used.
- Were the songs fitting to the service?
- Were they old or new?
- If new, how did the service attendees pick up the new songs?
- ii. Song and service flow-
- Did the songs flow together in speed, keys, and themes?
- How did they flow with other parts of the service?
- iii. Transitions-
- How were the transitions between the songs, themes, keys, and speeds?
- Were there any uncomfortable breaks?
- Any great transitions to be noted?
- iv. Worship leader-
- How/how well did the leader direct the congregation and the band?
- Were there vocal signals?
- Hand signals?
- Was there any time when you hand no idea where it was going next and where there was confusion?
- v. Spiritual impact-
- How was the depth of the worship?
- Did it make an impact on you?
- Was there evidence of impact on others?
- Were there any spiritual gifts manifested (if so, how was it handled)?
- Worship Critiques are Due Wednesday Nov. 21st at 2:00pm.
- 6. Worship Project/ Worship Sets
- Students will write a short (1 or 2 paragraph) statement of their general approach and philosophy for worship leading.
- Then choose 3 of the 5 situations below and describe the specific approach to each situation:
- i. Youth/young adult worship
- ii. Children’s worship
- iii. Intergenerational worship
- iv. Intercultural worship
- v. Small group worship
- For each of these settings, write a song list and explain/describe in detail how you would arrange/lead this list in the setting.
- Demonstrate through the list and explanation, your philosophy of leading worship for each of these types of services.
- (If you choose, you may demonstrate arrangements/leadership activities by actually leading one or more of these.
- If you choose this option, you are responsible to make arrangements for a worship team as well as a time/place for the demonstration.
- If you choose this option, you will still be responsible for demonstrating how these activities connect with your philosophy and approach.)
- Worship Project Due Friday Dec. 7th at 2:00pm.
- 7. Final Exam-
- a 100 minute exam, which will be comprehensive, covering all of the material for the term.
